This book fills the reader with wonder at Japan and its treasures, and awe at the gutsiness of someone who packs up, leaving an understandable life behind, and takes on a year in a strange culture. The challenges the author faced once she reaches Japan would have sent a weaker woman running back home to comfort and predictability.While I was in the process of reading the book (trade paperback), I found myself taking it with me every time I left the house. I was engrossed in the author's adventures and loved her insights about the life of a teacher to adult language students. Her emotional journey is as interesting as the exploration of Japan and travels in the area. Discovering that she is a survivor in the context of cultural challenges and her self-imposed isolation from the life she left behind makes for a good read.Filled with descriptions of arts and culture, people and places, with engaging examples that excited all five senses, by the time I finished reading, I felt I had traveled with the author from Texas through Japan and her associated trips. The sense journey makes for vicarious travels of the first order.If you want to feel better about travel, personal growth, and overcoming any limitations others seem to be placing on you, this is a good book to read. Whether visiting Japan is your goal, defying aging and limits, or getting out of your comfort zone and giving life lived to its fullest a chance, I recommend From Texas to Toyota.
